Reece Camp Carter

Biography and CV

Reece is a sculptor whose installations build from the new genres of her medium including sound, video, and performance. In all of her work she explores ideas of disrupting causality through fragmented time, repetition of ritual, the ambiguity between the signified mark and signifier of a physical gesture. Though direct, these experiences created are fragile and temporary, reflecting the nature of the memories and ideas that her audience may produce when relating to the work.

Her artworks are included in the art collection of Capital One and have shown at the San Francisco Modern Art Museum, and Utah Museum of Fine Art and. Reece’s first solo exhibition was in 1998. Hou Hanru nominated her as one of seven Bay Area artists for the Art Now Foundation’s Pioneer Art Award.  She has been a recipient of the Bennard Osher Grant. Reece has been an assistant to artist Bill Viola and Sha Sha Higby.  As a part of the sculpture department at Virginia Commonwealth University she received her Bachelor in Fine Art. She studied New Genres at the San Francisco Art Institute, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts.  Reece was born in Virginia and has made California her home for the last 15 years. Reece lives and works in Los Angeles where she continues to show.

Currently Reece is working in sound and video in varied stages of production and post. Privative an experimental cinema piece that speaks of the enmeshment in relationship has completed a screen test and continues in development and funding. Post production continues as a shoot in China wraps and the continued refining of the environmental sound album. She is planning an upcoming trip to Australia and Switzerland to complete her next bodies of work, an exploration of glacial depletion by sonic values of echoes and an artistic investigation into oral tradition of current agrarian and oceanic subcultures through ethnomusicology, argot, and storytelling.
